Rian Johnson's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has yet to debut on the big screen, but Lucasfilm is clearly confident in it and the director that it even locked him in for another "Star Wars" trilogy. Now, it has been revealed that the filmmaker is in the early stages of planning what the next movies will be about.

YouTuber Kenna McHugh recently shared a video of Johnson at a fan event in Mexico where he talked about the new trilogy for the first time. It has not been revealed what question was asked. However, it seems to be in line with the development of the next batch of films or how far along he is in the process, which turns out is not actually very far.

"We're gonna have to see," he said. "I'm just in the very beginning of starting to come up with what the new trilogy is going to be."

Johnson did not share his initial ideas, but he did say he is very excited about helming a new story in the big canvas of three films. "There's just so much potential and I can't wait to jump into it," he added.

Disney and Lucasfilm broke the news earlier this month that Johnson will write and direct the first installment in the new slate of films. He will also creatively oversee each of them alongside longtime collaborator Ram Bergman who also worked on "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." It will reportedly step away from the Skywalker saga and feature new and original characters instead "from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never explored before."

The studios have yet to give a release date for the three upcoming films. However, assuming they stick to their current pattern of alternating between a trilogy installment and a standalone movie, Screen Rant opines the first part of Johnson's trilogy could come as early as 2021 following the third installment of the current series in 2020.

In the meantime, fans can watch his entry to the "Star Wars" universe with "The Last Jedi." Starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren among others, the film will open in cinemas on Friday, Dec. 15.
