'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter' spoilers: an aged Alice

"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" is currently in production and will release in 2017, a full five years after the release of the previous entry, "Resident Evil: Retribution." Actress Mila Jovovich has now given a quick sneak peek behind the scenes via Instagram, revealing herself as an aged Alice.

Alice, the main character in the film franchise despite never appearing in the games the films are based on, has gone through several iterations in the series. She initially started as a rogue agent with amnesia until she later gained super powers due to a unique experiment while under the clutches of the Umbrella Corps.

She later lost these powers and had to deal with multiple clones manufactured by Umbrella. It is likely that the aged version Jovovich is showing off is not the same Alice audiences have been following but a computer AI or perhaps even the original human being that Alice was modeled after.

According to a report from Cinema Blend, there is also the possibility that this older version is indeed the same Alice and she may have prematurely aged due to the experiments and battles she had gone through over the years. This would be similar to the aging effect that happened to Solid Snake in "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots."

Besides Jovovich, other returning cast members include Ali Larter as Claire Redfield and Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker. It is uncertain if other series regulars such as Sienna Guillory and Johann Urb would be returning as Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy, respectively.

As stated in a report from E! Online, the film will have a few newcomers such as "Orange is the New Black" star Ruby Rose and actor William Levy.

"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" will pick up right after the events of the previous film and will see Alice team up with antagonist Albert Wesker as they head back to Raccoon City to battle Umbrella, now controlled by the computer AI known as the Red Queen.

"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" opens on Jan. 27, 2017.
