'Hannibal' season 3 synopsis revealed, new promo images released for episode 1

Hannibal NBC

In recognition of Hannibal Lecter's impending return to the small screen, NBC served up some juicy details about the sadistic doctor's comeback. The network first teased its beloved fannibals with a flurry of promotional images featuring the characters set to appear in season 3.

Looking ever sophisticated is Bedelia Du Maurier, who has been promoted to series regular. It's no surprise as she will be in most of the exploits of Hannibal, who took on a new identity in Italy as her "husband." Will Graham is also seen in one snap, and the brutal doctor himself is in another image.

And since the premiere of "Hannibal" season 3 is getting closer than it ever was, NBC has also dished out the official synopsis of its first episode, which will be graced by an exciting and excellent pack of actors, namely Tom Wisdom, Zachary Quinto, Jeremy Crutchley and, surprisingly, Eddie Izzard, whose character was last seen fighting for his life.

The synopsis reads:

Having successfully escaped FBI capture, Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving through the European landscape, with Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) in tow. But Dr. Lecter's old habits and opulent tastes are still on display as he settles into a new identity and life in Florence, Italy, working at the Palazzo Capponi museum. Glimpses into the past help inform his relationship with Bedelia, a pairing not clearly defined as friend or foe."

"Hannibal" season 3 will also introduce Francis Dolarhyde from the book "Red Dragon." The legendary character, who is as ruthless as the show's cult-favorite protagonist, will be played by "The Hobbit" icon Richard Armitage. Glenn Fleshler from "True Detective" will be joining the party, too, as well as Nina Arianda, "True Blood's" Rutina Wesley, and Tao Okamoto from "The Wolverine."

"Hannibal" season 3 will premiere in June 4.
