The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, will return to Swansea this month to deliver a public lecture on 'understanding religion'.

Dr Williams will visit the University of Swansea where he is expected to address the religious arguments against popular scientific beliefs such as those promoted in Richard Dawkins' 'God Delusion'.

A Lambeth Palace spokesperson has told the Swansea Evening Post: "Religion is in the news a lot these days and plenty of people are making quite a business of attacking it. But do they understand what religion really is?

"The Archbishop of Canterbury will be looking at some of the most common mistakes made by contemporary critics such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens."

The free lecture entitled 'How to Misunderstand Religion' will be delivered by Dr Williams at the Taliesin Arts Centre on 13 October.

Rev Nigel John, Anglican Chaplain at Swansea University, expressed his delight that Dr Williams, himself a former Dynevor School pupil, would be visiting the city.

He said: "It's a hugely important occasion for the Church, for Swansea University and for the city as a whole."

The lecture will take place at 4pm at the Taliesin Arts Centre on 13 October.
