'Reign' season 3 spoilers: Spain's wrath hounds Mary after Don Carlos' accident

Mary and Don Carlos in Reign season 3. The CW

Mary (Adelaide Kane) and the French Court will have to face the wrath of Spain when the second half of "Reign" season 3 returns in January.

Based on the trailer for the upcoming episode, the Queen of Scots finds out that Spain is coming to invade her country after Don Carlos (Mark Ghanimé) figured in an accident.

In the previous episode titled "The Hound and the Hare," Mary gave in to Don Carlos's whim when she agreed to cause him pain during their sexual encounter. But since Mary knew that she would have a hard time hurting another individual, she connived with Catherine (Megan Follows) to help her with the task.

Since Catherine knew how important Mary's possible marriage with Don Carlos will be, she agreed to help her. But as the Spanish prince realized that they were not alone in the room during their supposedly private interaction, he abruptly fled the room. However, Don Carlos accidentally tripped when he stormed out of the place.

Don Carlos survived the near-fatal accident, but Spain is still threatening Mary's kingdom because of it. In the midseason premiere, fans will find out whether Mary will choose to stay in France or head back to England.

But aside from the threat from Spain, Mary could soon find herself in the hands of another love when the series returns for the second half of the season. Based on the trailer, Mary will start seeing Queen Elizabeth's (Rachel Skarsten) spy Gideon (Ben Geurens), and they will share a passionate kiss in the upcoming episode titled "Our Undoing."

However, fans are wondering if Mary and Gideon are really in love with each other. Or are they only pretending so they can spy against each other's royal court?

The second half of "Reign" season 3 is set to premiere on Friday, Jan. 8, on The CW.
