'Jurassic World' 2 sequel plot update: next film may not be set in a theme park

Owen Grady and Claire Dearing might have escaped the island after the attack of the hybrid dinosaur in Jurassic World 1, but something might recur when the second installment of the franchise premieres on June 22, 2018.Universal Pictures

After Colin Trevorrow stated that he will pass on the directorial job for the "Jurassic World" sequel to someone else, the record-breaking director still talked about the possible plot of the film that he and screenwriter Derek Connolly will be working on.

According to Trevorrow, the sequel to the box-office hit movie will not just be about a group of dinosaurs that are out to chase people in the confines of an island since film viewers could easily get tired of that plot.

"I feel like the idea that this isn't always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponise it and later on we found it could be used for energy," the filmmaker earlier told Wire UK

Aside from writing the next installment in the new franchise based on Michael Crichton's novels, Trevorrow will also join original "Jurassic Park" director Steven Spielberg as the sequel's executive producer, while Frank Marshall will also return to supervise the film's production.

"Jurassic World" broke several box-office records after it was released early in June. It managed to earn $1,541,503,000 as of July 26, making it the third highest grossing film of all time in both the U.S. and the rest of the world. It also earned the most successful opening weekend box office title, raking in more than $200 million across the U.S.

Lead stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will both return in the sequel to reprise their roles as park animal trainer Owen Grady and operations manager Claire Dearing, respectively. But aside from these actors, there is no news yet about the possible return of the other characters in the film.

The "Jurassic World" sequel is slated to be released on June 22, 2018.
