The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev Alan McDonald, is set to take part in a major anti-Trident rally in Glasgow this weekend.
Rev McDonald will join politicians and peace activists at the Bin The Bomb rally in Glasgow on Saturday 24 February, being held to highlight the opposition to the Trident missile system and its proposed replacement.
Almost 2000 people are expected to attend the march through Glasgow city centre which will culminate in a rally in George Square. The Moderator, who is a noted campaigner against nuclear weapons, will speak at the rally of the Church of Scotland's longstanding opposition to the nuclear deterrent.
Joining him on the platform will be Alex Salmond MP, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, CND Vice-President Bruce Kent, Tommy Sheridan MSP and Rosie Kane MSP who are united in their stance against nuclear weapons.
"For 25 years the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has consistently argued that nuclear weapons are morally and theologically wrong and I have always strongly supported that decision. As the Government prepares to make the decision about renewing Trident it is now make your mind up time for all of us," says Rev McDonald.
The Moderator will follow up Saturday's rally by celebrating the first Sunday of Lent in the surroundings of St Andrew's University. Rev McDonald, who has been minister at St Leonard's Church in St Andrews for the last nine years, will meet the principal of the university and its divinity students, and will preach at its annual Founders and Benefactors Service.
