'Bates Motel' season 4: 'Psycho' events

 A&E

The first official teaser trailer for "Bates Motel" season 4 has been released, and despite being only half a minute long, it genuinely hints at the events that would eventually take place in the film "Psycho," which the series serves as a prequel of.

The teaser showcases Norma (Vera Farmiga) and her son Norman (Freddie Highmore) staring down the barrel of a gun as they scream at each other, calling out to one another before what is speculated to be the defining moment in the series: Norman shooting his mother and her lover, triggering the events that take place in "Psycho."

Further implying that season 4 will see Norman lose his mind and snap into the criminally insane psychopath he was in "Psycho" is the image of blood running down a shower drain. Fans of the original Alfred Hitchcock film will identify this as a teaser for the now-iconic shower scene that leads to the death of Marion Crane (Janet Leigh).

As stated in a report from TVLine, the whole teaser trailer is accompanied by a modern rendition of "Where Did Our Love Go," originally by Dianna Ross and the Supremes. Not only are the lyrics symbolic of the twisted love and guilt Norman had for his mother but it also embodies the psychological problem that Norman later lost his mind to.

While the teaser trailer hints at the possible death of Norma and the breaking of Norman's mind, the series has proven itself capable of prolonging the inevitable without meandering into boring territory. It is entirely possible that season 4 will merely set up Norman's love and guilt for his mother before she eventually gets killed in a future season.

According to Coming Soon, Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) will be drawn back into the lives of Norma and Norman and he will do whatever it takes to protect and love Norma. This may imply that his love for Norma in this season will trigger Norman's insanity, causing the latter to murder the lovers out of jealousy.

"Bates Motel" season 4 premieres this March 7.
