Rey Mysterio received one of the loudest ovations of the night when he surprised the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) universe just over a week ago.

The masked luchador entered the ring to a chorus of cheers during the men's over the top rope Royal Rumble at number 27, where he wasted no time kicking away at Intercontinental Champion the Miz and Adam Cole, whom he eliminated.

Mysterio would then hold his own until the closing moments of the match, where he stood in the top six along with Finn Balor, Roman Reigns, Shinsuke Nakamura, John Cena and Randy Orton. Mysterio managed to hit a double 619 on Cena and Reigns, but he was eliminated by Balor. Nakamura would then go on to win his first Royal Rumble match and declared that he will face AJ Styles for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 34.

Mysterio's return was so well received by wrestling fans that the video from WWE's official YouTube channel, which featured his return had 5 million more views than the one that showed Ronda Rousey's surprise appearance, as of January 31.

Even at 43 years old, Mysterio appeared to still be in very good shape, as seen by how quick and explosive his movements were during the rumble match, reminiscent of when he competed for the company during his prime. This sparked rumors that the man known as one of the greatest cruiserweights of all time is ready for another run with the company.

In an interview posted by the news website Mirror, Mysterio was asked whether fans can see him bring back his high flying maneuvers back to WWE programming, to which he responded positively:

"I want to say that there is a big possibility that I will be back. [We're] figuring out what the situation is, you know from both ends. But there is definitely a positive feedback on behalf of the fans, on behalf of the WWE staff and behalf of myself man. I think we're possibly going to sit down and negotiate something where we can both work together and have a good time and enjoy."

Cageside Seats posted rumors that the WWE is planning to hold a Latin American Championship tournament similar to what they did in the United Kingdom, and that a deal for Rey Mysterio to rejoin WWE will be announced soon so that he can participate in the tournament.
