The Handmaid's Tale's Aunt Lydia is still alive after Emily's attack in season 2 finale

First thing's first, this article contains major spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale season 2 and 3 so do not continue reading if you don't want to know what's coming up.

But if you just can't help but devour everything out there about this hit Hulu show, then read away!

The finale of The Handmaid's Tale season 2 dropped to Hulu on Wednesday and saw a major blow up of emotions by Emily towards Aunt Lydia. Is she still alive after Emily ferociously attacked her with the knife and pushed her down the stairs?

The answer to that question appears to be yes, according to comments by executive producer Warren Littlefield who told EW Radio, SXM 105, that they had already told the actress who plays Aunt Lydia, Ann Dowd, that she was going to be in season 3.

That was a major spoiler for fans of the show that Littlefield appeared to make by mistake - lucky us.

He told the radio station: "The first thing we said [to Ann] is, 'You're not dead, but it's going to be a pretty brutal scene'...She was completely up for it."

He then added: "Maybe that's an enormous spoiler I just gave you."

Sure is!

He then goes on to talk about how vital Aunt Lydia has been to the world of The Handmaid's Tale, so it seems like they couldn't really imagine season 3 without her.

"Aunt Lydia is such a powerful and important part of this world and this show. But we fear for her life, and it is absolutely life-threatening. And that's where we leave her, in a life-threatening situation," he said.

You might think from those comments that there's a possibility she may have survived this attack but might still die later on next season.

But showrunner Bruce Miller seemed to suggest in comments to reporters this week that this character is going to be a part of the show for some time yet.

"Aunt Lydia doesn't die [laughs]," Miller said. "I don't think Aunt Lydia can die. I don't think there are forces in the world strong enough to kill Aunt Lydia. And by extension, the incredibly strong, fabulous Ann Dowd I think is with us for a long, long time, as well."

Hulu hasn't announced the premiere date of The Handmaid's Tale season 3 but the last season debuted in the spring so there's a good chance they will follow the same launch window with the next season.
