A rough cut of the first trailer for "The Dark Tower," the film based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, has been leaked online. The official version, with all of the special effects added into the video, will be released before Christmas this year.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the trailer was somehow leaked online, and Sony Pictures has yet to give an official comment on how the footage managed to escape their security measures. The trailer that was leaked online is also notable for being incomplete, with a time stamp and multiple scenes still with a green screen instead of finished effects.
The video, which was uploaded on Vimeo, has since been pulled down. The report does give a basic rundown of what was contained in the footage, stating that the trailer begins with the boy, Jake (Tom Taylor), speaking to a psychiatrist about a destroyed world, a "broken gunslinger," and a warlock clad in black as they all race towards a tower that binds all the worlds together.
Jake then discovers that these worlds are real and are about to collide with the modern world. Polygon also reveals that by the end of the trailer, Roland Deschain's (Idris Elba) meditation is heard. This meditation is done to sharpen his mind for battle. A full description of the meditation is also listed.
Although the trailer is unfinished, it is noted that the footage indicates that the movie adaptation is going to steer away a bit from the tone set by the books. While the books focused a lot on mysticism, macabre horror, and Western gunslingers, the film adaptation appears to be fusing science fiction, high fantasy, magic, and monsters.
A full version of the trailer will be shown to a limited audience during the Entertainment Weekly Popfest in Los Angeles and the official full-length trailer will release before Christmas this year.
"The Dark Tower" will release in theaters on Feb. 17, 2017, and a prequel television series is in the works and may premiere by 2018.
