"Sherlock" season 4 has been a long while coming, particularly due to delays brought by the busy schedule of lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. It is now even possible that their schedules and the story of season 4 will conclude the series, and Cumberbatch has recently spoken out to hint that the show is indeed ending soon.

Speaking to GQ magazine, Cumberbatch stated that the show may have already run its course and that there is a low possibility of "Sherlock" moving forward with another season. This comes due to the fact he is now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Doctor Stephen Strange.

"It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately," Cumberbatch explained. "We never say never on the show. I'd love to revisit it, I'd love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we've made something very complete as it is, so I think we'll just wait and see," the actor went on to say.

The actor also added that it would be troublesome if he never got the chance to play Detective Sherlock Holmes again, although it was unlikely that he would be in the role in the near future.

Unfortunately, the BBC has yet to announce whether there may be a fifth season or at least another Christmas Special similar to last year's "The Abominable Bride." The network has not even unveiled the title of season 4's final episode, knowing that it would give audiences a big clue on the finale's plot.

"Sherlock" season 4 will premiere early next year, although a specific premiere date is yet to be announced by the BBC and CBS.
