'Rick and Morty' season 3 air date, spoilers, news: Beth and Jerry are getting divorced?

Jerry and Beth in "Rick and Morty" Adult Swim

"Rick and Morty" season 3 is currently in development, and while the premiere episode will see the titular characters reunite once Rick has been saved, the rest of the season may see the family split apart as Beth and Jerry get a divorce.

On the season 2 commentary DVD (via Geek), co-creator Dan Harmon explains that the failing marriage between Beth and Jerry had been a running gag that they initially thought would run its course throughout the life of the series, but as early as now, it is apparently starting to run thin.

"I thought that Jerry and Beth getting a divorce would be like Kenny being killed in 'South Park,' like, when we first conceived the show that it would never run out of shelf life that that was the kind of joke of like, oh all our parents were about to get a divorce," Harmon explained. "But, I think Millennial viewers are like, 'I don't understand, why don't they just recycle more?' So, season three we kind of move the Beth story forward."

During season 1, Morty's parents had always argued, but by the end of each episode, they'd be able to resolve their problems. In season 2, they were able to get marriage counseling on an alien planet, and it appeared they have fixed their marriage issues, but it may not turn out as good in season 3.

Harmon's statements indicate that they will be getting divorced and that Beth may be meeting someone new in her life, making her the main focus, while Jerry simply moves out and lives as a bachelor once again.

No official release date has been announced for season 3, although it was stated last year that it would premiere before the end of 2016. According to the iTech Post, this is becoming less likely, and "Rick and Morty" season 3 may instead premiere before March 2017.
