Project Morpheus VR headset news: Release date, pricing, and compatible games

 PlayStation Official Site

Early in March this year at the Game Developers Conference 2015, Sony confirmed that virtual reality (VR) headset Project Morpheus will be available for sale by 2016.

However, the company has not issued a formal announcement on the specific release date.

The date is yet an unknown subject, but what's known about Morpheus is that it will not be created for "non-gaming content," as confirmed by president of Sony's Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida.

This only means that a user of the upcoming headset will need a fully-loaded personal computer (PC) or PlayStation 4 (PS4) to enjoy games that support the headset.

When it comes to smartphone usage, Yoshida confirms that it won't be possible. Display on Morpheus needs to run on 120Hz in order for the player to experience a smooth visuals display of the game.

Since PS4 also supports various hubs, one can watch 3D movies and even experience different entertainment content using Project Morpheus.

As for the price, Sony said that announcing it will be too early. In an interview with Yoshida by Game Industry, the subject on the price of Morpheus was discussed.

Aside from the fact that it's too early to tell, Yoshida also mentioned that the company is still working on the cost of goods that cover the Project Morpheus.

Several factors still have to be considered to come up with the right pricing, especially if Sony wants to aim making VR experience mainstream.

There's still a long way to go before the 2016 release, but according to Yoshida, the device's progress is doing great. There were even updates given to the device to make it ready for its launch next year, according to Venture Capital Post.

It was announced during the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) conference that "Rigs" and "Wayward Sky" are two new games that fully support Project Morpheus.

Other games that will work well with Sony's VR technology include "ARK: Survival Evolved," "Project CARS," and "Among the Sleep."
