Nintendo NX release date, specs news: Console may be region-free; Size and controller teased

Very little is known about the Nintendo NX other than the fact that it is launching in March 2017 and will have a few key games releasing for it, such as "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." However, a new report from Let's Play Video Games reveals possible specs and design choices for the console, including the fact it might be region-free.

This will make the NX the first region-free console from Nintendo in a decade. The Wii-U, Wii, and Gamecube are all region-locked meaning games from Japan will not run on a console from the US and vice-versa. However, if the NX is region-free this means US gamers can import games from Japan, particularly games that will not launch in the US.

According to the report's source, a development kit has been sent to video game developers to help them start making third party video games for the NX. Details regarding how the controllers detach to the main console are detailed and it is shown that the top of the console has an SD slot and a TV port.

The report states that the console is "slightly thicker than the Nintendo 3DS XL when folded, so 25 mm, with a width of around 281 mm and a height of 92 mm with the controllers attached."

The controllers can be separated and when they are, players will discover they have the same size and a "width of 38 mm, making the console itself have a width of 205 mm." It is uncertain if the NX is a hybrid of a home console and handheld or if it is a successor to the 3DS or the Wii-U.

Nintendo has yet to confirm or deny any of these reports and as of such the details such still be taken as a rumor. Nintendo is expected to give a proper unveiling of the NX sometime soon, particularly given that it is launching in just a few more months.
