Michael Schumacher's rep and family have been keeping mum about the F1 star's condition since he was brought to his Swiss home to recover after waking up from a six-month coma. Schumacher had a horrifying skiing accident back in December 2013 at the French Alpine resort of Meribel which left him with serious brain injuries. Now, a new report claims that his family has been spending more than a £100,000, or roughly about $150,000, a week for his care since he was brought home.
According to Mirror.co, it is understood that the cost of Schumacher's health care has made a considerable dent in the family's fortune as a state of the art facility was installed in their home. Aside from his wife, Corinna, the 46-year old is reportedly being cared for by a medical team composed of 15 people who are giving him round the clock care.
At the time of his accident, it was reported that Schumacher's net worth was estimated at about £500 million, or more than $700 million. But earlier this year, it was reported that Corinna sold their private jet, as well as their Norway home, likely as a way to cope with the mounting expenses needed for the star's recovery.
While the racing star was in a coma, the website reports that Schumacher allegedly lost a quarter of his body weight, leaving him with a total weight of 8 and a half stone, or 117 pounds.
The family has not released a statement to the media about his current condition, but earlier this year, Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm said that while he is recovering slowly, the public should keep in mind the seriousness of his injuries.
"We need a long time," said Kehm about Schumacher's recovery. "He is making progress appropriate to the severity of the situation.
One of the F1 star's children, Mick, also reportedly confirmed to an F1 commentator last year that his father was recovering "very slowly."
