'Iron Man 4' plot news: Doctor Doom taking up the Iron Man mantle?

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark aka Iron Man Marvel

With all the changes happening to the comic book version of Iron Man, fans are starting to speculate if the Marvel Cinematic Universe will catch up with these developments for "Iron Man 4."

It's been a while since Tony Stark had a standalone film, although he was a great presence in the most recent Marvel films. On the comic book front, Iron Man underwent a big change.

Doctor Doom will be taking up the Iron Man mantle following the events of the "Secret Wars" arc in his bid to redeem himself in the world. With such big change, could "Iron Man 4" see Doctor Doom as Iron Man?

Movie TV Tech Geeks noticed that although a majority of the Fantastic Four have been given a send-off in the "Secret Wars" event, Doctor Doom was kept intact and is even becoming a version of one of Marvel's most popular characters.

According to the site, it is possible that Marvel may have managed to somehow acquire the license to the character from FOX for the character to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That being said, it looks like "Iron Man 4" with Doctor Doom is entirely plausible and the character might finally find himself in the MCU at the very least.

However, since the films in the MCU are connected and that the big screen world of Marvel has a long way to go before it could catch up to the current events in the comic book world, such big change in an iconic character like Iron Man will have to be seriously thought over.

In addition, Robert Downey Jr. is well-loved as Iron Man, so fans won't expect the MCU letting go of him anytime soon.

Apart from Doctor Doom transforming into a version of Iron Man, another big change in the character in the comics is that a 15-year-old girl named Riri Williams will be taking the mantle with Stark retiring after "Civil War 2."

It remains to be seen if Riri will be introduced in the MCU as well, but it appears to be a great premise to tackle in "Iron Man 4" as the film could still be a long way off.
