'Indiana Jones 5' cast, plot news: George Lucas playing a role in development

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones LucasFilm

Disney and Lucasfilm are currently developing a fifth "Indiana Jones" film that will see Harrison Ford reprise the role of the titular hero. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that there will be sequels or a reboot that will follow.

Iger explained that after the release of "Indiana Jones 5" they will not be working on building something like a cinematic universe similar to "Star Wars" or the Marvel films, which release films on an annual basis. Instead, they will work on some kind of continuation or a reboot.

"Well, we'll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That's what I mean. It's not really a reboot, it's a boot - a reboot. I don't know," Iger stated. "We got Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what's the direction? I've had discussions about what the direction is, but I don't want to get into it."

During the interview it was stated that there are films that serve as both a sequel and reboot at the same time, using the term "requel" for these times of movies. Iger stated that there is no definitive plan at the time being or if the movie after "Indiana Jones 5" would be such a requel, proper sequel or reboot with a new actor.

Fans have speculated that after "Indiana Jones 5" it is possible that a future film will start with Harrison Ford playing the older Indiana Jones telling a story of his younger days before the movie transitions into the 1930s or 1940s with a younger actor portraying the younger Indiana Jones, serving as both sequel and reboot.

In a report from The Bearded Trio, Steven Spielberg also confirmed that George Lucas will be returning as executive producer, although he may not be penning the script. Lucas, famous for making the "Star Wars" films, also wrote the four previous "Indiana Jones" movies.

"Indiana Jones 5" will be released in theaters on July 19, 2019.
