HTC U release date news: Squeezable smartphone to be launched on May 16

HTC is reportedly preparing to unveil its new "squeezable" smartphone called the HTC U on Tuesday, May 16.

The Taiwan-based consumer electronics and telecommunications company posted on Twitter that they will conduct a big event next month for the launching of a new product.

The event was given the tagline "Squeeze for the Brilliant U," with a video showing a blurry phone in the background. Based on the video, users can take advantage of the device's "Edge Sense" feature by squeezing its sides to be able to use the new smartphone. With a simple squeeze of the device, users will be able to trigger a certain action on the mobile product. However, there are no details yet regarding the types of actions that the "Edge Sense" could activate.

Previous reports claimed that the upcoming HTC U smartphone, earlier known for its codename "Ocean," will come with a 5.5-inch screen display with 2560 x 1440 display resolution, at least 4 GB or up to 6 GB of random access memory (RAM), as well as 64 GB to 128 GB of internal storage option. The upcoming device is also expected to omit the headphone jack.

Also, the device is anticipated to feature a Snapdragon 835 processor as well as a 12-megapixel rear and a bigger 16-megapixel front-facing cameras. It is also believed to run using the Android Nougat 7.1 mobile operating system upon release. The device is also expected to come with a 3000 mAh battery as well.

The launch event of the HTC U can be accessed worldwide through the livestream event that can be viewed on HTC's website. However, those in the United States must stay up late to witness the product's unveiling, since the event will be held at 2 a.m. EDT or 11 p.m. PDT.

More details about HTC's upcoming squeezable device are expected to be announced in the coming days leading to the big launch event.
