After the unexpected twists in the season 6 finale, fans could expect to see Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) back in the intelligence duty in "Homeland" season 7.

Before revealing that US President Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) betrayed Carrie when Keane ordered for the arrest of Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) and several other incumbent officials from the CIA due to their alleged link to the assassination attempt, showrunner Alex Gansa reveals in an interview with Variety that the former CIA agent will be seen back in office next season.

"One thing I can tell you about next season is that we have to get Carrie back into the intelligence business. She's been out of it for two years. It's time for her to return. We have to construct some sort of narrative to allow that to happen," Gansa states.

Since the seventh season will mark the last two installments of the series, Gansa reveals that the upcoming season will take the series "in for a landing."

But when asked about the plot of the upcoming season, the showrunner reveals in a separate interview with Deadline that they are currently in the very early stages of development of the season's writing process. "We have some big ideas but we are just at the very beginning of that process. We don't really even know where we're going to be shooting the last two seasons."

Meanwhile, Showtime is still mum about the possible release date of "Homeland" season 7. During its first five seasons, the network released the political thriller series during the fall season. But for season 6, the network opted to air the premiere episode in January this year. This is why it is still hard to speculate about the show's possible premiere date for its last two seasons at this point.
