Grand Theft Auto 6 may not arrive until 2022, source claims

"Grand Theft Auto 5" became a huge hit due to its expansive world, and "Grand Theft Auto 6" is bound to be even bigger. Facebook/Grand Theft Auto V

Gamers haven't exactly grown tired of Grand Theft Auto 5 but that doesn't mean they're not eager to get their hands on the highly anticipated sixth installment either.  But where is this elusive GTA 6 and what do we know about it so far?

One thing's almost for sure, it's not going to be in our hands any time soon.  According to one 'reliable' source, the sixth game in the hit vice franchise is not going to be released until 2022 - that's a painful 4 years from now.

Another interesting tidbit from this supposed source is that the franchise will be returning to familiar ground as, they allege, the next iteration will be set in Vice City once again.

If both rumors are true - the year of release and the setting - then it's possible Rockstar might be planning a 20th anniversary celebration of sorts as the game was first released all the way back in 2002 set in Vice City - yes it really has been around for that long already!

Of course, these are just rumors for now and until Rockstar Games confirm one way or another, fans are still free to hope it will arrive much sooner than that.

It's hard to say though, even if Rockstar does give an official release year, as they are notorious for delaying on releases, often going well past the originally announced release date.

Other rumors relate to the setting possibly extending into South America - which would tie in well with its rumored codename 'Project Americas.'

But the numerous updates coming out for GTA 5 are probably Rockstar's own answer to the possibility of fans growing frustrated at the long wait for Grand Theft Auto 6.

And of course, it's not like Rockstar are in desperate need of a big hitter to boost their earnings.  They're already sitting pretty on another hit franchise - Red Dead.  And fans of that game will know that the Red Dead Redemption 2 is on it's way, which you can read more about here.
