'Fallout 4' PS4 news: Bethesda exploring alternatives to the PS4 mod support that never was

Mods are a big part of the gaming experience for "Fallout 4" and the "Elder Scrolls" games. And while mods have been denied for PlayStation 4 (PS4) users by Sony, Bethesda Softworks marketing executive Pete Hines confirms that the company is working on alternatives for PS4 players.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Hines explained "I assure you we don't lack for alternatives. We are trying to do the most possible for PS4 players."

A second tweet then explained that Bethesda did work on PS4 mods, but in the end, Sony had pulled the plug, re-confirming a statement they made several weeks back, "We would have released mods on PS4 some time ago if it was up to us. We were told no."

It is uncertain at this point if this means Bethesda may support third-party means of getting PS4 mods to work or if they are working on PS4-exclusive content such as a PS4-exclusive DLC.

Fans speculate that this means Bethesda will officially launch some of the most popular PS4 mods as official DLCs for the game. This will allow the system to get some of the most requested mods seen on the PC and Xbox One but now as official content. If this does happen, the DLC is speculated to be offered for free.

Polygon also reports that this means no mod support is coming for the PS4 version of "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition," another game from the company which enjoys mod support on the PC platform. Players will also experience mod support on the Xbox One when the Special Edition launches in November.

Microsoft has also used the situation to further promote the Xbox One by launching a tweet pointing out how the Xbox One not only has mod support but also backward compatibility for last generation video game. Apart from that, the company also boasted a faster and more reliable network.
