'Devious Maids' season 5 premiere news: Lifetime cancels show

Devious Maids Lifetime

According to a report from Deadline, "Devious Maids" has officially been cancelled by Lifetime and there will no longer be plans of pushing forward with season 5. The report further reveals that the series had seen a significant drop in viewers with each new season and because of this the show had been cancelled. The series had just aired its season 4 finale this past Aug. 8.

Deadline further reveals that the show did start out strong, with the first season garnering 3 million viewers - consisting of both those who watched it live and same day viewers - on its season finale. However, with each successive season the show saw a drop in viewers and the season 4 finale garnered only 0.923 million viewers.

It is noted, however, that despite the drop in viewers the series had a consistent critic rating. "Devious Maids" as a whole has a 7.9 out of 10 rating on IMDB and is considered by many fans as a strong drama series with comedic elements, akin in many ways to "Desperate Housewives."

Cinema Blend paints the similarities between the two even more as the show does focus on the lives and secrets of the rich and famous but in "Devious Maids" the perspective is thrown to that of four Latina housemaids working for these rich families.

The show was conceived by Marc Cherry as well as Eva Longoria, the star of Cherry's former series on ABC. The pilot for "Devious Maids" was designed for ABC but the show was picked up by Lifetime. It is also noted as the first series to have an all-Latina ensemble cast that was not primarily aired on a Spanish language network.

According to the report "Devious Maids" has also been the only returning original series on Lifetime until the network renewed "UnReal" for a second season this year, further proving the quality and lasting power of the show.
