'American Crime Story' season 3 spoilers: EP Ryan Murphy drops official title of season 3

Ryan Murphy may have dropped the official title of the third installment of "American Crime Story."

The executive producer of the true crime anthology posted a photo on Instagram, showing Darren Criss and the new cast member Max Greenfield on the set of "American Crime Story" season 3.

Aside from the announcement that the "New Girl" star will portray an unannounced role in the series, Murphy also reveals that the new installment will be called "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story."

The installment will center on the 1997 murder of iconic designer Gianni Versace, who was shot and killed by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Versace will be portrayed by "The Girl on the Train" star Edgar Ramirez, while Cunanan will be played by "Glee" star Criss.

The cast will also include Penelope Cruz as Versace's sister Donatella, Ricky Martin as Versace's longtime partner Antonio D'Amico, as well as Annaleigh Ashford in a still undisclosed role.

Murphy talked about the decision to feature Versace's murder in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in October 2016. According to the executive producer, he became interested with the case because of the manhunt that happened to find the culprit.

"I was always very moved and freaked out by the Versace assassination, and I thought it was a really great story to do because it's a manhunt season," Murphy stated in the interview. "[Serial killer Andrew Cunanan] killed four people and then Versace, and was on the loose. We're exploring the reasons of how he got away with being undetected."

The executive producer also believes the story is very tragic and Versace could have stayed alive if the killer was caught immediately. "That is a true crime story in America, so we're tackling that," he also shares.

"The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" is expected to air on FX after the airing of "American Crime Story" season 2 that centers on the events that happened during the Hurricane Katrina.
