In the season 2 finale, fans saw Citizen Z leave the shelter of the Northern Light and try to make his way out of the sub-freezing NSA safe house. However, a cliffhanger was also seen, as evidenced in the closing parts of the episode where a mysterious was seen walking towards DJ Qualls' character.

The question of who the mysterious stranger is will be answered when "Z Nation" returns for a third season.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, series creator Karl Schaefer answered the question. According to the creator, the stranger will have an intertwined story with Citizen Z, and the series as a whole. Schaefer said, "I'll just say [the person is] a she. It's an Eskimo girl, and the story's going to take a turn that not many people will be expecting at all."

The creator also hinted that since Citizen Z already left the NSA hideaway, he might find himself in another series location close to the heart of fans, but did not provide any concrete details on it. Schaefer added, "I will tease something for season 3: You may see Citizen Z down in the lower 48. I'm not sure, though. I can't promise anything yet. It's only Day 2 in the writers' room."

"Z Nation" is slated to return for its third season next year. Continuing where season 2 ended, season 3 will see the main characters continue to try to survive a post-apocalyptic zombie world, three years after a zombie virus took over the country.

The heroes try to escort the only known survivor of the zombie plague to the last known viral lab, in the hope of using the survivor's blood to trace any clues for making an antidote and cure for the virus.

Aside from DJ Qualls as Citizen Z, the series also features Kellita Smith, Anastasia Baranova, Nat Zan, and others.
