'Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands' gameplay: New game to add side-missions, near future setting

 Ubisoft/Ghost Recon

The next entry in the "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon" franchise is rumored to arrive next year. Its first trailer gives plenty of hints at what "Wildlands" is all about, including its having side-missions that affect the outcome of the main storyline.

According to GamesRadar, the upcoming "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands" game will shift from a tactical shooter to more of an open-world sandbox title. Instead of a straight story campaign, players will be able to accomplish side-missions as part of the open world location (set in Bolivia).

However, the game works much like any other open-world game – although the side missions seem to have indirect connections with the main campaign, the outcome of each one will also have an impact on the story. For example, the gameplay trailer presented by Ubisoft showcased a "White Hat" target. While the easiest play will be to assassinate the target, the decision by the player will have consequences, such as another "White Hat" drug lord taking over the business, or an open war between cartel bosses.

As an open-world game, "Ghost Recon: Wildlands" also seems to be set in a not-so-distant future. While the weapons and gear look like upgraded versions of current real-life military load-outs, "Ghost Recon: Wildlands" doesn't look as futuristic as upcoming role-play, first-person shooters like "Infinite Warfare." Moreover, although tactical military load-outs may be seen in the opening of the missions, the players are dropped into enemy lines and will more often than not have to resort to using enemy weapons and gears.

As to when it will be released, speculations suggest that "Ghost Recon: Wildlands" will have an early 2017 outing, and Ubisoft may present it at the upcoming E3 2016, happening next month. With a 2017 outing, it is expected that full details will be provided by the publisher at the event.
