GTX 1080 vs Titan X: Nvidia's new GTX lineup takes top spot from Titan X

Nvidia has already released its newest top-tier GPU, the GTX 1080. Reportedly, first impressions are favorable and some say the new graphics card pushes down another Nvidia flagship, the Titan X, in rankings.

According to Ars Technica, although the GTX 1080 is a direct follow-up to the Titan X graphics card, the improvements and changes on the new GPU place it immediately on top of the chain. Reportedly, the new GTX 1080 is higher than the Titan X in speed by 35 percent, while the base model – but still powerful – GTX 980 Ti is beaten by as much as 62 percent in real-world use.

However, not all fans seem to be swayed with the release of the new high-end GPU. Comparing the new GTX 1080 to the Titan X, some observers mentioned how the 8GB RAM of the new card competes with the 12GB one of the Titan X by having a faster and newer architecture. However, although the new Pascal architecture used on the GTX 1080 is faster, there is still a 4GB of difference between the two, meaning the newer card still has a lower limit in terms of amount of data.

Meanwhile, being a more recent release, the GTX 1080 offers more features and support, such as full compatibility with 4K and VR content at an improved frame rate.

The new GTX 1080 was announced last month, together with the base model GTX 1070. The new GPU is currently available for $599 in the U.S. There is also a Founder's Edition clad in aluminum and with a vapor chamber cooling frame, which is available for $699.

Although Nvidia has yet to confirm it, some followers are in agreement that since a new GTX has been released, fans may expect a new Titan lineup iteration to follow soon, which will also be generations ahead of the current-gen Titan X.
