The mid-season premiere of CBS' "Star Trek: Discovery" is set in January 2018. Fans will have to wait a few more weeks to learn the fate of the people aboard the U.S.S. Discovery, especially after the cliffhanger moment that seemingly transported the ship to a distant location. In spite of the winter break, the series' creator has his eyes fixed on the future, citing the possibility of linking "Discovery" to the original "Star Trek" TV show.

According to "Star Trek: Discovery" executive producer Aaron Harbert, there are plans to establish the connection between the show and first "Star Trek" series. However, the fans are likely to see major references to the original TV show in season 2. To note, "Star Trek: Discovery" relates to the Leonard Ninoy-starrer as Spock's adopted sister, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin), as the central character of the show.

In an interview with Metro, Harbert revealed that building the connection with the original series is included in the ongoing discussion for season 2. The showrunner also mentioned the challenges that the writers are going to face to bring up the familiar elements of the first "Star Trek," given that "Discovery" is set 10 years before the original series.

For one, the "Star Trek: Discovery" writers should find a way to fit the current Spore storyline to the original, as well as revealing the surrogate daughter of Sarek (James Frain). Although, it would be interesting to finally make references to Spock in season 2, given that Michael has never talked about her brother so far in the show.

Meanwhile, the second half of "Star Trek: Discovery" season 1 is expected to deal with the unknown location where the U.S.S. Discovery was transported to. CBS calls the remaining six episodes as chapter 2, and according to the latest rumors, this new chapter may introduce the infamous Mirror Universe from the original show. Executive producer Alex Kurtzman already mentioned at the New York Comic Con that "Discovery" will have "some episodes about the Mirror Universe," as a way to pay tribute to the first "Star Trek" series.
