If rumors are to be believed, Sony Mobile will be changing its outlook for its 2016 smartphone flagships as speculations float online that the upcoming Xperia Z6 will at least have five iterations.
According to Tech Times, the rumors started when benchmark website AnTuTu posted on its Weibo account the apparent key specs of the upcoming Sony Xperia Z6. The announement says there will be an addition to the Xperia Z6 base model and Compact version. Apparently, the next Xperia Z6 will also have a smaller Z6 Mini, a larger Z6 Plus, and a foray into the phablet category, the Z6 Ultra.
GSM Arena reported that the AnTuTu announcement also seemingly let out the purported display sizes of each. The base model Xperia Z6 will retain its 5.2-inch display, staying in the same category as its predecessors. Meanwhile, the same as the previous Z3 and Z5 iterations, the upcoming Xperia will also have a Z6 Compact, a smaller and variant with 4.6-inch display.
The additional Z6 Mini will serve as the smallest version of the new Xperia flagship, rumored to come out with a 4-inch screen. It will also be the less powerful of the whole lineup, as it will feature a Snapdragon 620 processor. The other four versions, on the other hand, have been speculated to integrate the new Snapdragon 820 chipset.
Apparently, Sony Mobile also wanted to corner the large-display smartphone market. Reportedly, the upcoming flagship will add a new iteration to its lineup, which will come with either an Xperia Z6+ or "Z6 Plus" moniker. Whichever name Sony will adopt as the official one, the larger Xperia Z6 iteration is supposed to have a 5.8-inch display.
In addition, though, Sony also reportedly brought its Ultra variant to the upcoming Xperia Z6 lineup. The Z6 Ultra will be the largest, coming out as a phablet with a 6.5-inch screen.
