After Oculus and HTC announced the release schedule and price details of their respective virtual reality headsets, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, Sony has followed suit and finally revealed when their own PlayStation VR will become available.

In a post on the PlayStation blog, Andrew House, the president and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, wrote: "With the annual Game Developers Conference in full swing, I'm pleased to give you an exciting update on PlayStation VR. Today, we are announcing that the PlayStation VR headset will launch in October of this year for a suggested retail price of USD $399 / CAD $549."

The package includes the PlayStation VR headset, stereo earbuds, PS VR headset connection adaptor, processor unit, HDMI and USB cables, and AC adaptor and power cord. Six games included in The Playroom VR will be free to download.

According to House, they expect more than 50 games to be available by the time the consumer version of the headset is rolled out. Among the numerous titles that gamers can purchase are the PS VR-exclusive "RIGS Mechanized Combat League," "Until Dawn: Rush of Blood," and "Tumble VR." Other titles that are being prepared for the VR headset include "Battlezone," "EVE: Valkyrie," "Tekken 7," " Wayward Sky," "Headmaster," "Robinson: The Journey," and "Star Wars: Battlefront VR." More can be expected as there are at least 230 developers who are developing content for Sony's virtual reality platform.

The PlayStation VR's panel measures 5.7 inches that has a resolution of 1920 x RGB x 1080 with a field of view of approximately 100 degrees. It is equipped with an accelerometer and gyroscope and has HDMI and USB ports. Owners of a PlayStation 4 console can immediately use the PS VR by simply plugging in the device.

Pre-orders are now being accepted by several online retailers.
