The iPhone 8 Plus has lorded over other high-end smartphones for quite some time in terms of camera features, according to the DxOMark rating. However, its reign ended this week as the tech reviewer gave an equivalent rating to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 camera.
As reported by BGR, the iPhone 8 Plus received an overall rating of 94 in DxOMark following its release. The Apple handset remained at the number one spot for a few weeks, but with the camera capabilities of the Galaxy Note 8 now tested, the iPhone 8 Plus now shares the top position with the Samsung phablet.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 garnered a 94 rating from DxOMark, which is a weighted average of all ratings given to each of the smartphone camera's aspect. The phablet was able to get a perfect score of 100 when it came to the camera's image capture. However, the Galaxy Note 8 got a lower score in the video department at 84 points.
One of the features of Samsung Galaxy Note 8 camera heavily praised by DxOMark was its bokeh effect, 9to5Mac reported. It was particularly noted that the bokeh effect is applied more often when capturing static images. Even as DxOMark stated that such feature poses risk of affecting image quality due to "repeatability," the bokeh effect was not evident on one-third of the tested portrait shots.
Aside from the bokeh effect, DxOMark praised the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 camera for its zoom feature. It was even regarded as the "best smartphone for zoom." Although, the concluding remarks for the iPhone 8 Plus sounded more positive, describing it as a "solid performance upgrade over the iPhone 7." Nevertheless, the two handset's high rating says a lot about their image and video capture capabilities.
There are more premium smartphones scheduled to arrive in the market in the coming weeks, including the tenth anniversary iPhone X handset and the newly-launched Google Pixel 2. With this, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone 8 Plus may not stay in the top spot for long. Also, the public is reminded that the DxOMark result tends to be subjective as the rating comes from actual users, in contrast with objective hardware tests such as CPU benchmarking.
