Sony Corporation is said to be dedicated to providing a great PlayStation VR experience to its fans when it releases its own VR headset sometime in October, thus the PlayStation 4.5, or internally called Neo, was born.
According to issue 294 of Edge Magazine, the still-unannounced PlayStation 4.5 exists because the current video game console will not be able to provide the requirements of PSVR.
An anonymous chief technical officer (CTO) familiar with the industry said, "PSVR was going to be terrible on a PS4. It was going to be truly awful. Something a bit more powerful starts to bring VR into range. If you want to deal with crazy requirements for performance in VR, you absolutely have to do this," International Business Times UK reported.
The CTO added, "I'm not interested in marketing strategies or adoption rates or whatever. I'm not considering that. But as someone who does the technology for video games, somebody doubling my GPU and adding 30 percent CPU is brilliant. I'd love that every two years. I'd love it every six months, if possible. All I want is the most powerful hardware that I can get my hands on."
In a previous report by GiantBomb, the PlayStation 4.5 Neo is speculated to be carrying an 8 Jaguar Core processor with a clock speed of 2.1 GHz, an improved AMD GCN with 36 CUs running at 911 MHz GPU and 8GB GDDR5 memory capable of 218 GB/s.
The current PlayStation 4 contains the same number of Jaguar cores but runs at only 1.6 GHz and has AMD GCN with 18 CUs at 800 MHz GPU and a lower memory speed at 176 GB/s. So the PSVR needs more in order to run the application.
The report added that the NEO will be able to support 4K video output, though it is not required for the game itself.
Fans are expecting more information about the PlayStation 4.5 Neo at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo, set to happen on June 14 to 16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
