Phil Robertson joins son Willie in endorsing Donald Trump for the U.S. presidency

Even though "Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson originally endorsed Republican candidate Ted Cruz for the U.S. presidency, he is now giving his support to Cruz's rival, Donald Trump.

"I'll be enthusiastically behind him [Trump]," Phil tells The Daily Mail. "I look at the other side and have watched the last eight years. And I just have to go with someone within the Republican Party."

Phil admits that he still has some reservations about Trump, but the one thing the reality TV star is certain of is that he does not like the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to win the presidency.

"I look at the alternative, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders – and then honestly I look at Trump and say, 'What kind of leader is Trump going to be?' No one really knows. It will just sort itself out," he says. "But they're putting him in there against Hillary Clinton – and it looks like it's going to be her – so I'll definitely be there for him."

Trump was pleased that now both Phil and his son Willie are backing him. "Wow! Such a great honour to have Phil's endorsement," he says. "His son, Willie, has become a great friend of my son, Don. What a great family."

Phil's son Willie has long given his endorsement to Trump, saying that the business magnate is a "real leader" who would be perfect for the White House, according to the PR News Wire.

"He's not afraid to tell it like it is," Willie said about Trump. "He's a friend of the Second Amendment...the man I'm standing behind to be the next President of the United States – Donald Trump."

"He represents success and strength, two attributes our country needs. Like me, he is a successful businessman and family man and I endorse his candidacy for President of the United States," he added.

As to why he originally gave his endorsement to Cruz, Phil explains that the Texas senator was a "strict constitutionalist" who relies heavily on the Bible. Phil really wants the next American president to be a man of God so he pushed Cruz for the White House.

"It was a way to share the good news of Jesus with people when I spoke on his behalf," he says. "But now he's out. Trump's in. So I'll vote for him, no question."
