Oscar Pistorius, who is currently on trial for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, tweeted a series of messages on Sunday.
Pistorius' defense team rested their case on July 8, and the athlete had not posted any tweets since February 14, the one-year anniversary of Steenkamp's death.
At noon on Sunday, the former Olympic track star tweeted a portion of Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted." The remainder of the verse reads "... and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (New International Version).
Less than half an hour later, he posted a collage of himself with various children. Some of the children in the photos are double leg amputees, like Pistorius, and he is shown smiling with them and assisting them. He captioned the collage, "You have the ability to make a difference in someone's life. Sometimes it's the simple thing you say or do that can make someone feel better or inspire them."
His next tweet came just minutes later, when he shared a screenshot of a passage from the late Dr. Victor Frankl's memoir, "Man's Search for Meaning." Dr. Frankl was an Auschwitz survivor and founder of the psychological theory of logotherapy.
The tweeted excerpt includes the following lines: "Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love." The paragraph also describes how a man who has nothing can still experience happiness – if only for a moment.
Pistorius' most recent tweet was posted at 1:59 a.m. Monday morning, when he shared a prayer with his over 300,000 followers.
"Lord, today I ask that You bathe those who live in pain in the river of Your healing. Amen."
The post has been retweeted and favorited over 800 times.
Pistorius, 27, had been dating model and reality star Steenkamp, 29, for three months before he shot her through a bathroom door at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. Pistorius maintains that he thought an intruder was in the bathroom.
Prosecutors are expected to submit closing arguments on July 30, and the defense will file closing arguments on August 4.
