Nintendo NX release date, features news: The Pokémon Company teases hybrid device

The Pokémon Compay CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara has not just confirmed that the company will be making games for the Nintendo NX, the mysterious console that Nintendo aims to launch next year as a successor to the Wii-U, but also hint that the NX is indeed a console-handheld hybrid of some sort.

"The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a handheld device," he told the Wall Street Journal, "We will make games for the NX," the CEO went on to say.

There have been multiple rumors in the past centered on the console, such as the NX utilizing a handheld design akin to a tablet but with detachable controllers and the option to still connect to a television screen. Other rumors suggest it will be using cartridges instead of CDs or that it may be more powerful than the current Xbox One.

None of these rumors have been confirmed by Nintendo, although Ishihara's statements do indicate that the console may indeed be a cross between a traditional home console and a handheld portable that can be taken and played anywhere.

Ishihara continued to explain that they were aiming to further improve how they present the NX to the public and that it was crucial to inform the consumers how the NX was unique and what it brought to the gaming industry in general. In many ways, this mirrored how the Wii was originally launched.

Although The Pokémon Company, which comprises of Nintendo, Game Freak, and other partners, focuses primarily on the main "Pokémon" games on handheld devices like "Pokémon Sun and Moon" on the 3DS they have made console games in the past, such as "Pokémon Coliseum" and "Pokémon Stadium."

Nintendo has yet to confirm the nature of the NX, and it is highly rumored that the company will officially unveil the console this October during one of their Nintendo Direct videos.

The Nintendo NX is expected to launch in March 2017.
