Nintendo has officially unveiled its new game system and branded it as the Nintendo Switch. The new console is scheduled for release in March 2017.

In a first look video, the industry giant showcases the new Switch system. It confirms previous rumors about the system, most notably that it will be a hybrid console and handheld device. In the first look video, it is confirmed that the Nintendo Switch will work as a home console via a Switch dock, and a more traditional controller. However, when taken out of its dock, the Switch then becomes a handheld console, together with detachable Joy-Con controllers on either side.

One noted improvement seen on the trailer is Nintendo going back to game cartridges. Instead of physical discs, the Nintendo Switch will use cartridges dubbed as Game Cards. However, the Game Cards are only a quarter of the size of the old cartridges, leading to portability.

Transitioning directly from a home console to a mobile device is one of the highlights of the Nintendo Switch. In the video, the device is seen being used directly and easily at home via the dock, and then taken out on the streets, at the airport, and even inside a plane. In handheld mode, the Switch has its own kickstand, and the Joy-Con controllers can also be taken out and used wirelessly.

Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America stated: "Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like. It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries."

In addition to the new trailer video, Nintendo has also confirmed that publishers have already taken an interest in the new Nintendo Switch. The list is a mix of big-name and indie developers, including Capcom, Bandai Namco, Electronic Arts, and Bethesda. The footage even hinted that some big games may make it to the Switch, like "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" and "Splatoon."
