'NBA 2K17' release date news: MyCareer mode joined by 'Creed' star Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan in "Creed" Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

The "NBA 2K" series has always been known for adding quirky gameplay elements. "NBA 2K16" had segments with director Spike Lee, and a report from Polygon now confirms that actor Michael B. Jordan, known primarily for his role in "Creed," will be added to the upcoming "NBA 2K17."

Fans point out that the joke being played is that Michael B. Jordan shares a name with one of the most famous NBA players of all time, Michael Jordan. The two are often mistaken for each other and this tidbit may be played out often in the MyCareer storyline of "NBA 2K17."

"I'm humbled at the opportunity to help influence a franchise that I've been a passionate fan of since its first release," explained the actor. He also confirmed that he did both the motion-capture work as well as lending his voice for the game.

"Veep" actor Matt Welsh will also be in the game's college coach, Hemsley Adson. Comedian Hannibal Buress has also been confirmed to be in the game, voicing a barber named Ice. The report further points out that the MyCareer storyline in "NBA 2K17" was written by "Creed" co-writer Aaron Covington.

According to the report, Jordan will be playing a character named Justice Young who shares many similarities with the player-creator character in the sense that Justice is also a rising NBA star. Justice is also stated to be the player character's main partner and together they are referred by many as "Orange Juice."

The report also explains that this is the first time players will be able to access dual player controls. Players can command Justice to immediately shoot the ball, head to a specific spot on the court or perform an assist and players can even switch directly to control Justice as if he was their original character.

"NBA 2K17" will be released for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One this Sept. 20.
