With Microsoft's recent announcement about the demise of Windows 10 Mobile, rumors about the Surface Phone appear to have died down. However, some tech enthusiasts are still hopeful that Microsoft's next smartphone sporting the Surface label will see the light of day.
As reported by Tech Times, Microsoft revealed in Twitter that they are no longer focusing on the Windows 10 mobile platform. The Redmond-based tech giant said that they have already spent much resources to keep the Windows 10 mobile OS going. The demise of Windows 10 Mobile would also mean that the chances of Surface Phone being developed is almost non-existent, given that the Surface device is likely to run the Windows 10 mobile OS, just like the Lumia series.
In spite of the Surface Phone rumors dwindling down, there are still leaks surfacing online about the device's supposed specs and features. One particular leaked report suggested that the Surface Phone can still exist even as Microsoft has already stopped supporting the Windows 10 Mobile. This is due to an all-new Windows mobile OS that will boast major improvements over the Windows 10 Mobile. According to some rumors, the Surface Phone is likely to introduce the first ever Windows Core operating system, which will be known as a "modular and universal OS."
Aside from a new Windows mobile OS, there is more proof that Microsoft is still pushing through with the Surface Phone. Phone Arena reported that Pegatron, the tech company behind the production of Surface Studio, has already commenced the production trails on the Surface Phone.
It is unclear when will Microsoft unveil the Surface Phone, as earlier projections regarding the device's launch did not pan out. First reports about a Windows-powered handset coming from the Surface family appeared in 2016, with some analysts thinking that the Surface Phone would launch during the Windows 10 Creators Update event in October last year. It is also worth noting that the previous Microsoft hardware events made no mention of an upcoming Surface mobile device.
