Truly, God works in mysterious ways.

Take the case of Silverio Lopez, a native from the South American country of Guatemala, who found a scrap of paper lying on the road — a scrap of paper that led to his Christian conversion, which in turn led other native Indians in that country to follow Christ.

In a story first told by William Cameron Townsend, the founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators, and retold recently by God Reports, Lopez was prompted to visit the village shaman in his native land when one of his children died and another became sick.

The shaman blamed the sickness on the spirits of Lopez's dead ancestors. The shaman told Lopez to buy candles and light them in front of a certain image in a church. Lopez followed the shaman's orders but soon fell into heavy debt.

One day while walking, Lopez found a scrap of paper on the road. He instinctively picked it up and found a Bible verse written on it. The verse was from Matthew 21:13. It read, "My Father's house should be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves."

Intrigued by the verse, he looked for it in the Bible upon returning home. While reading God's Word, he had a sudden awakening and realisation that he made the wrong choice when he turned to the village shaman for help for his child's medical problem.

God's Word led him to a doctor who simply prescribed medicine that promptly cured his daughter's stomach ailment.

Apparently guided by a divine inspiration, Lopez then he went to a church and talked to a pastor who introduced him to Jesus.

Right there and then Lopez embraced Christ and soon became an evangelist in his village.

Lopez shared his newfound faith with everyone he met. Six months after accepting Jesus, Lopez was able to lead 40 Cakchiquel Indians to Christ.
