"Longmire" initially started on A&E, but after the third season, the show was canceled. Fortunately, the series was able to continue when Netflix picked it up and moved forward with a fourth and fifth season. However, the series is now ending as Netflix renews it for a sixth and final season.

According to TV Line, Netflix is going to move forward with season 6, but this is going to be the last hurrah for the highly praised series. The last season will still have 10 episodes, and it will close the current plotlines that are still ongoing, such as the relationship regarding Walt (Robert Taylor), Dr. Monaghan (Ally Walker) and Vic (Katee Sackhoff).

Producers John Coveny, Hunt Baldwin, and Greer Shephard also thanked Netflix "for the opportunity to compose a closing chapter for these beloved characters that inspires lasting memories. Most importantly, we're committed to delivering a dynamic and satisfying conclusion to our fans that rewards their longtime loyalty."

Netflix Vice President of Original Content, Cindy Holland, also stated that Netflix was proud to be the home of the series and that they are confident they will be able to provide a satisfying conclusion to the series in the season 6 finale.

Cinema Blend points out that the show may have been canceled due to decreasing number of viewers. The show may be highly praised but its overall plot and design caters to a very small niche. It also suffers from the fact that it does not skewer its story and characters for a younger audience, instead of moving ahead to cater to an older crowd.

No official release date or plot spoiler has been announced for "Longmire" season 6, but the show is likely going to premiere in September 2017, given that the previous two seasons premiered on Netflix in September. The final season is also speculated to mix the events from the show and the original novels to deliver a conclusive ending to Walt's journey.
