LG G5 rumors: LG to use own processor for next flagship, but not for G5?

LG is also into the processor and chipset business and has already released an SoC called the Nuclun. Recent reports suggest that the tech manufacturer is already developing a chipset follow-up to be called Nuclun 2. However, LG will not be using its homegrown processor on its next flagship device, rumored to be the LG G5.

According to GSM Arena, LG is planning on developing the Nuclun 2 processor for its next flagship after the G5, which reportedly is the successor to the newly released V10. Rumor has it that the V10 follow-up will be seen in the second half of 2016. Although LG is already working on the chipset, the process is still in its early stages and will not make the purported launch of the G5 early next year.

In addition, the industry follower said that LG considers the G-series its premium flagship, and based on the rumored specs of the G5, the tech manufacturer considers Nuclun 2 to be inadequate. This means that the upcoming LG chipset is still below the level of premium processors like the new Snapdragon 820 (which was earlier rumored to be featured in the LG G5). However, the report did say that LG claimed the Nuclun 2 to be slightly more powerful performance-wise than the Kirin 950 chipset by Huawei.

Working on this claim, Android Authority deduced that the Nuclun 2 could have been manufactured with an ARM Cortex-A72 and A53 CPU cores via TSMC's 16nm FinFET process.

Meanwhile, if the rumors are true, then LG will be using a Snapdragon 820 chipset for its G5. This new processor will support the upcoming flagship's rumored premium features, including an iris scanner, a 5.6-inch IPS display, and a 20-MP main shooter with Sony lenses. The LG G5 will also reportedly come out with all-metal, unibody design.
