"Jessica Jones" season 1 was highly praised for how it tackled sexuality, PTSD, and alcoholism while still presenting itself as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Season 2 is going to continue this trend despite the fact that Jessica (Krysten Ritter) managed to stop the villain Kilgrave (David Tennant) by the season 1 finale.

In an interview with Empire (via Comic Book), showrunner Melissa Rosenberg explained that just because Jessica defeated and killed Kilgrave, it wouldn't mean she was cured of her trauma and stress she received from all the things that she went through. She stated that she learned a lot about handling such a deep and sensitive issue such as PTSD during her time on "Dexter."

"I learned from working on 'Dexter' that you can advance the character, but you never want to cure the character," Rosenberg explained. "People don't just heal, you don't go through that just to say, 'Oh, he got arrested, he's in jail, I'm OK now.' That trauma is a huge part of who she is now," she went on to say.

Rosenberg also tackled the possibility of Jessica getting into a relationship with her adopted sister and close friend, Trish (Rachael Taylor). She explained that as far as they were concerned for the moment, they were just intimate friends and nothing more. However, she did keep the doors open and stated that things may change in the future.

It was also stated that she had minimal input in "The Defenders," which will see Jessica Jones team up with Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and other Netflix–Marvel superheroes. She explained that she communicates with "The Defenders" showrunners to ensure that "The Defenders" and "Jessica Jones" season 2 blend well.

No release date has been confirmed as of writing, but as previously reported, "Jessica Jones" season 2, the solo "Punisher" series, and "Daredevil" season 3 will not be premiering until after "Luke Cage," "Iron Fist," and " The Defenders" are all done. This could mean that the earliest time that "Jessica Jones" season 2 may premiere in late 2018 or in 2019.
