The world of comic book superheroes on television and films is just beginning to break out, with the upcoming "Wonder Woman" and "Captain Marvel" movies featuring female leads and female directors. It has now been confirmed that "Jessica Jones" season 2 will have only female directors to helm all 13 episodes.

According to Variety, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg made this announcement during the Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment conference, held at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism of the University of Southern California.

Rosenberg explained that their goal was to prioritize female directors and that they were going to approach female directors before contracting male directors during the pre-production phase of "Jessica Jones" season 2. This would allow the studios to get as many female directors as possible before hiring male directors.

It was also confirmed that the studio executives were on board with this, particularly with how high the demand was these days for female directors. However, she then stated that someone from Marvel TV suggested hiring only female directors, and Rosenberg immediately jumped on the idea.

The report points out that having only female directors is very rare, and one of the only other shows that achieved this was "Queen Sugar," which had female directors for its first season.

When asked about the development of the second season, she only stated that they were nearing the completion of the writing phase and were preparing to start filming early next year. She did not divulge further details such as any plot spoilers or who the main villains for the show may be, given that the main antagonist in season 1 was killed off in the finale.

No official release date for "Jessica Jones" season 2 has been announced, although given that Marvel TV and Netflix will launch "Iron Fist" and "Defenders" first, it is likely that "Jessica Jones" season 2 will not roll out until late 2018 or 2019, alongside "Daredevil" season 3 and the debut season of "The Punisher."
