iOS 11.1 news: Apple teases latest emoji coming to firmware's major update

Apple iOS 11 preview in different Apple devices Apple website

The highlight of the upcoming iOS 11.1 major update will be a brand new set of emojis. Apple gave a preview of some entertaining emojis that will grace users' keyboards starting this October.

As reported by The Verge, Apple has shown over 30 new emojis coming with the iOS 11.1 update. The new emojis are part of the Unicode 10, which already introduced 56 emojis this year. To recall, the Cupertino-based tech giant made several entries for the World Emoji Day earlier this year.

So far, some of the confirmed new emojis to be included in the iOS 11.1 update are a giraffe, a zebra, a hedgehog, an insect that looks like a cross between a cricket and a grasshopper, plus an unknown animal that The Verge compared to the pre-historic Brachiosaurus.

Aside from the new entries in the emojis' animal department, the iOS 11.1 will also introduce new ones to herald the upcoming autumn and winter seasons. There will be characters such as a scarf, a baseball bat, and a trench coat. There are new food characters in the lineup as well, including a Chinese takeout box emoji that goes well with the dumpling emoji from Unicode 10. Other fresh food emojis coming up are the broccoli and an unspecified kind of pie.

The iOS 11.1 emoji lineup has special gender-neutral characters, which will all become available in different skin tones. Perhaps the most interesting part of the new human characters are the mythical and supernatural emojis, which include a mermaid, a vampire, a pixie fairy, and a genie.

These new emojis are expected to be out for developers and public beta testers next week, who will try the iOS 11.1 beta version 2, 9to5Mac reported. The final firmware version of iOS 11.1 with all the new emojis included are expected to be available by the end of October. As for the new emojis' arrival in other Apple platforms such as the watchOS and macOS, more details are expected to be announced soon.
