The Google Pixel 2 XL is among the top-end smartphones launched this year, although being a premium device does not guarantee that problems would never occur. As the search engine giant's massive flagship handset has only been in the market for a few weeks, users have reported yet another issue concerning the responsiveness of the screen edges.
As reported by Engadget, Google Pixel 2 XL owners are now complaining about the lack of response when pressing on the display edges. It appears that many people are experiencing the problem, as seen in the comments posted on the Google Pixel 2 community page. Specifically, the Pixel 2 XL fails to detect touch near the edges of the screen, thus the devices do not perform the necessary actions.
One user said in the community website that he conducted an experiment to prove that the edges of the Pixel 2 XL screen do not register touches. He tried to do swiping gestures on the display's edges, which prompted an action. However, tapping on the edges is not always detected by the handset.
For now, it appears that the unresponsive screen edges of Google Pixel 2 XL have nothing to do with hardware defects. If the problem does lie with the hardware itself, then it would a much bigger headache for both Google and the consumers. Android Police stated that the real culprit is the device's accidental touch protection feature, which can sometimes be over the top. This issue can be solved through a software patch.
The official Google Community Manager assigned on the Pixel 2 community page addressed the issue on unresponsive screen edges. He revealed that Google is currently working on a fix to solve the problem. The fix is expected to roll out through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, although the release date of the fix is yet not specified.
The lack of response from tapping the screen edges is just one of the many issues that appeared upon the release of Google Pixel 2 XL. Earlier, Google has addressed the audio recording issue where high-pitch sounds can be heard in the sound files. There were also some users who experienced possible screen burn-ins, which Google has also fixed through a recent software update.
