Golf day raises money for impoverished communities

It was more than just sport when a group of golfers took to the green at Whipsnade Park Gold Club in Hertfordshire last month.

Together, they raised £1,300 for developing nations with their charity golfing day.

Individual winner was Chris Carr, while the winning team was Grass Roots.

The funds raised will go to Christian charity Rope, which works to improve the quality of life in impoverished communities around the world.

Organiser Steve Brehm said: “We had just under 50 golfers and it was a great day. It was the second year that we’d done an event like this and it’s all about having fun and helping a good cause.

“The weather wasn’t the greatest to start with but it picked up in the afternoon and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

"I’ve been a keen golfer for most of my life and although I don’t play as much as I’d like to, it was a pleasure to compete for charity.”

Brehm, who attends Northchurch Baptist Church in Berkhamsted, is also a representative for Rope and travels throughout the south of England speaking at churches on their behalf.

He added: “It’s a charity that I have supported for about ten years. I love the fact that you can see exactly where your money goes and that you can read the stories of the individuals and families that you have directly helped.”

There are already plans for another gold day next year, which Brehm hopes will raise even more money.
