After a highly controversial match this month, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is moving forward and looking to fight once more in September. His next fight is said to be the last one for his boxing career though many believe he will go beyond that in 2016.
Mayweather is coming off a controversial fight against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao. The controversy is not really about the outcome but how the fight progressed. Despite leading many to believe he would get it on with Pacquiao, a lot of fans were disappointed to see him 'running' as usual.
Regardless, there was no doubt that Mayweather won the match handily and that his tactics were to be expected. Still and all, it wasn't exactly the fight that many had been expecting. Many boxing fans were looking for a furious exchange of punches but as fate would have it, Mayweather employed his defensive wizardry against an aggressive Pacquiao.
All that aside, Mayweather is 48-0 and will be looking to equal the feat of Rocky Marciano (49-0). Though no names have been mentioned officially, many believe that the frontrunner is British boxer Amir Khan.
Aside from Khan, the names of Shawn Porter and David Broner are also being mentioned as his probably opponents for September 12, 2016.
Whoever it would officially be, Mayweather reportedly wants someone tough for his final bout. Despite those claims however, everyone knows that Mayweather will likely employ the same ploy, box defensively, jab and then move.
Whatever happens, Mayweather is expected to stay the course and snag that record-tying 49th win. Aside from that, he is not expected to employ a different kind of tactic, regardless if it is Khan or not.
Will it be his last fight? Many critics doubt it. Many believe he will fight again next year and break the 49-0 barrier.
Could it be Pacquiao?
Mayweather denies it despite rumors that both camps are already in talks.
Just like their first meeting, it should not be surprising to hear about a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II. After all, racking in $500 million in revenue is something that could egg them to get it on one more time.
But based on the way the first Mayweather vs. Pacquiao joust went, the sequel may not go beyond that mark especially with Mayweather choosing to play it safe and fight defensively.
