It is no big secret that Floyd Mayweather Jr. plans to fight just one more time with a target date set for September 2015. The only thing missing is who Mayweather will choose to fight in his finale bout.
Some feel that Mayweather and Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao should go at it once again. However, with the PacMan undergoing surgery for an injured right shoulder, it seem unlikely that this will materialize. Pacquiao will be out for at least 6 months to recuperate from the shoulder procedure, and could even be out for up to 12 months.
So where does this leave Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Who will he face instead?
Word is that the Mayweather camp has approached British boxer Amir Khan. According to a report by the Telegraph, Khan has claimed that he was approached by Mayweather's manager during the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The supposed fight of the century left practically the whole world disappointed, with some criticizing Pacquiao for being unable to really put pressure on his opponent, and others claiming that Mayweather did nothing but run and jab to keep Pacquiao away from him to get a boring decision on points.
Making the whole situation worse is the revelation after the fight that Pacquiao had fought with a serious injury to his shoulder, explaining why his offence seemed so one-dimensional, and shedding light as to why Pacquiao threw fewer punches than Mayweather, and so many fewer than he has done in any of his previous fights.
The Mayweather-Khan tussle remains a rumor for now. However, Mayweather has announced that he would be open to a rematch with Pacquiao though that may almost certainly upend the American's plans to fight one last time in September, and could push his career through to 2016.
Khan is considered an easier opponent for Mayweather, something that Floyd Mayweather Sr. started yapping about if you compare him to Pacquiao. With a Mayweather-Pacquiao II potentially on the shelf until next year, Floyd could fight Khan and achieve the goal of matching Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record.
While that idea looms, Amir Khan is focusing on a scheduled bout this coming May 29, 2015 against Chris Algieri at the Barclays Center in New York. Before entertaining any thoughts of possibly facing Mayweather, Khan needs to come up with an impressive performance against the 31 year old former kickboxer turned boxer. If he wins that convincingly then he could find himself lined up for a massive bout with Mayweather.
