England Through to World Cup Quarter Finals; YWAM Seek to Share Gospel

David Beckham became the first England player to score at three World Cups as his free-kick gave England a 1-0 victory over Ecuador to set up a Quarter-Final tie against Portugal who overcame Holland 1-0 in a somewhat undisciplined encounter.

|PIC1|England had to rely on a trademark 30-yard free-kick from Beckham, who was later sick on the pitch after suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion.

It was a stifled performance by England who looked settled at times, only to lose concentration the next.

Frank Lampard had a number of chances to finish the game off, but was uncharacteristically sloppy with his finishing.

Fortunately, it made no difference. England, for the second time under Eriksson, have reached the last eight of the World Cup finals.

Portugal’s 1-0 win over Holland was marred by being the most undisciplined match in World Cup Finals history.

The match saw 4 red cards and 16 yellow cards, as both sides finished the match with just 9 men on the field.

Deco and Costinha were dismissed for Portugal, and will now miss the Quarter Final match with England, while Khalid Boulahrouz and Gio van Bronkhorst saw red for Holland.

Maniche scored the only goal, firing into the top corner after 23 minutes.

Explaining why they have come to the World Cup, team leader Pablo said, “It is a unique opportunity to reach people from all over the world in the same place, in a spirit that is open to receive new messages, and so it is a perfect venue to come and bring a new idea of who Jesus is.”

Reporting on how they intend to reach out, Pablo told how they want to join the local church in what they are doing: “We are serving them with performing arts...and during and after the performance we go to talk to people and go to make the link between them and the local church. When they are from other countries, we try to get their address or telephone number and make a link with the Evangelical Alliance in their home town.”

In describing how the YWAM team uses performing arts as a foundation to reach out to people, Pablo told, “Our dances and dramas speak about life, and about enjoying life to the full. About really being mindful that you are more than just a body; you have a spirit, you have a soul. So our messages are uplifting to make people realise that they have a God that loves them...and they can enjoy life with God and have a lot of fun.”

Talking about the atmosphere surrounding the World Cup, he said, “They (the people) are very open, it is a very open place. It is nothing like what we heard it was going to be like. It is amazing. In our team we have 13 people and we have people from 9 different nations. So that helps us a lot to find people that speak the same language or that have similar backgrounds. So we find common ground very easily.”
