Donald Sterling divorce news 2015: Former LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling files for divorce

Donald Sterling has long been mum in the limelight but now the controversial former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers is once again in the limelight.

Sterling has reportedly filed for divorce against his estranged wife Shelley Sterling citing irreconcilable differences after their much celebrated legal battle surrounding the sale of the ballclub in August, 2014.

It will be recalled that Donald Sterling went under fire for his famous rants against African-Americans in 2014 which resulted in his banishment from the NBA. It was also at that time when NBA commissioner Adam Silver encouraged team owners to unite in pressuring Sterling to sell the LA Clippers.

Shelley Sterling sold the ballclub to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion in August, 2014.

Shelley Sterling did not comment on the divorce filed by her husband though she did tell ABC News back in May 11, 2014 that she had long planned to divorce her husband.

"For the last 20 years, I've been seeing attorneys for a divorce," she said. "In fact, I have here – I just filed – I was going to file the petition. I signed the petition for a divorce. And it came to almost being filed. And then, my financial adviser and my attorney said to me, 'Not now.' "

Donald Sterling claims that Shelley has not given him his share of the money from the sale. Such was included in the divorce papers which stated "Donald hereby demands an accounting and distribution" according to the LA Times

Donald underwent medical evaluation and doctors found him mentally incompetent. Sterling contested the said findings and claims to have found a doctor who can declare him mentally fit (via CNN).

Just last April, Shelley Sterling won a court battle over her husband's alleged mistress V. Stiviano which required the latter to return over $800,000 in cash as well as some automobiles given to her by Donald Sterling. She was also ordered to vacate the $1.8 million duplex given to her by Donald Sterling.
